Angel Assassins?
So Anne Rice is putting out new books. Angels who are Assassins? The book store owner guy was telling me about it today and we both were horrified at the thought of it. I mean really? Angel assassins? Next we're gonna have satan pirates or something equally silly. I think it's a unique idea, but why does it have to come from Anne Rice?

Thoughts?

If this is inappropriate please delete post.. I wasn't sure.. :P

Angels are the new vampires.

Those are my thoughts.

I thought zombies were the new vampires.

Nah, vampires were the new zombies. Now you have this book and Legion coming out, I'm guessing asshole angels is the way to go!

But in Christian mythology, God uses middle-men all the fucking time. So, not that far-fetched to me.
czol on February 3rd, 2010 12:29 am (UTC)
Agreed. Angels are God's messengers - that's basically their purpose. And sometimes the message isn't a nice one...

Though as someone mentioned below the book isn't about this at all, so meh.

Satan pirates lmfao. I'd love to read that book -- angel assassins, not so much.
imora_mi_savur: bookimora_mi_savur on February 2nd, 2010 06:56 pm (UTC)
I think it will depend on how it's handled.

Didn't she write a book already which involved angels? Might have been someone with a similar style, I don't have it anymore so can't check.

Her new religious tendancies might actually help with it. In religious lore angels are actually pretty badass, smite first ask questions never figures anyway. With the exception of a couple of angels whose purpose was to deliver the word of God to humans. If you read Revelations they are pretty much God's assassins anyway.

If however she's going to go with the Hallmark version of angels and just twist them, then yeah... Can't really see it working that way.

I'll probably give the book a try, can't be any worse than her books about Jesus (I hope not anyway).

I was just going to post something along those lines.

Not unique at all. Divine retribution. Michael and his fiery sword. Angel of Death. Plagues of Egypt. As imora_mi_savur said, the book of Revelations.

As for Anne Rice, she apparently had some religious reawakening. I'd have to read some of her new stuff to be able to guess if it's genuine or marketing ploy, but more power to her either way.

I mean it's kinda of a unique idea to me. I haven't really heard about any angel assassin like ideas except if you can count Loki in the movie Dogma...

I would imagine his stuff might be better.

I haven't been able to take Anne Rice seriously in quite some time. I mean, I enjoyed "Interview with the Vampire" and "The Mummy" along with a few others, but this whole "Holier-Than-Thou" thing she's got going on now is not really working for me. And it comes off really badly in her writing, too.

But I don't know. Maybe she'll surprise me or something - there could be worse things to surprise me with... :)
ceinwyn81ceinwyn81 on February 2nd, 2010 07:12 pm (UTC)
I don't like her holier-than-thou thing either. It's one thing to find religion but she did it in such a way I wanted to slap her around a little. I might check one of these out just to see whats going on lol

Assassin Angels
Repent, or else.
PolarisDiBpolarisdib on February 2nd, 2010 07:41 pm (UTC)
Satan pirates would kick ass.

Angel assassins are great fun, too, it's just the whole actual religious belief behind them that's a bit more concerning. Otherwise, supernatural baddies vs. badasses is always fun to at least think about.

It reminds me of when I was given one of those free religious books things that was a response to the Left Behind series by even MORE extreme Revelationists, and it helped me understand how well religion can sometimes fit right into science fiction as they literally had angels with laser beams on their heads flying around blowing up aliens and shit. It was awesome!

Angels with laser beams! Must read it! lol

I think I maybe more inclined to read Anne Rice's Angel ninjas Assassin books if she could include some type of Pirates in them.. Satan Pirates or not

I would totaly read that crap out of that novel.
PolarisDiBpolarisdib on February 3rd, 2010 10:03 pm (UTC)
Well, then I recommend you find a liberal arts campus, find the guy handing them out, and read it.

It's not hard. You follow the crowd of distracted students surrounding the woman in the dreadlocks and the hipster dude with tight pants who are screaming "ALL I'M SAYING IS READ YOUR OWN RELIGIOUS BOOK!" to the man in the suit who isn't even looking at them as he spouts Biblical quotes (at least they seem like Biblical quotes--they could just very well be Bible-language sounding nonsense for all anyone can hear or interpret) with spread arms and another suited, younger guy carries a box full of these cheap onion-skin-paper printings of the book, complete with 666 barcode on the back (look it up, it's this whole conspiracy theory) around to hand them out to students who just laugh and mug and end up leaving them on the ground, wasteful littering bastards that they are in the middle of admittedly not accepting trash.

It's great fun if you've never been to an event like that. In terms of religious people on campus, it's only matched by the guys that go into the library with megaphones and start yelling fire and brimstone, to be kicked out by campus security five minutes later while protesting about their freedom of speech. However, in terms of similar campus kookiness, you most certainly should walk right past the apparent street preachers and find the guy with the boombox who blasts techno music and breakdances all day, every single day. He's actually a pretty cool guy once you get to know him, and his music helps drown out the stupid from the students actually bothering to respond to the preachers on one side, and that semi-mentally disabled guy on the other side who sings karaoke with his headphones on so that all you get is his toneless wailing without any of the music.

That sounds like it could be completely awesome actually. It's too bad it's by Anne Rice. I read Blood and Gold by her, never again.
ceinwyn81ceinwyn81 on February 2nd, 2010 08:55 pm (UTC)
Everything in the Vampire Chronicles was great up until Memnoch the Devil. After that it went down the crap hole. Blood and Gold, Pandora, and Armand were awful. Then she went all religious and started being weird.

Well I certainly have never heard of angels being assassins. Which makes it a unique idea to me. I never really considered the possibility of someone actually doing this. And with Anne Rice behind it I have a feeling it's going to be complete and total waste of paper.
Heatherbubblefaerie on February 2nd, 2010 09:00 pm (UTC)
The angels aren't assassins in the book according to the publisher's weekly description. The angels offer an assassin redemption if he goes back in time and does work for them.
ceinwyn81ceinwyn81 on February 2nd, 2010 09:02 pm (UTC)
Oh my.. I don't think that is any better than Angel Assassin ; ;

Oh, I see. The angels aren't the assassins. They're the mob bosses who hire the assassins.

It's a fun idea... if done right. Anne Rice lost me with Queen of the Damned, which wasn't even that bad if compared to some of her newer books. And since it seems like the angels are not the ones getting their hands dirty on this future novel... well, it's probably going to be a major fail. But I am curious to a fault, so I'll probably read it D:

Satan pirates would be awesome, in capable hands!
